How to Mount a GPS Tracker Under a Car

Can I Mount GPS Tracker Under Car or VehicleOne of the quickest and easiest ways to mount a GPS tracking device or a GPS tracker is under a car or vehicle. This is usually accomplished by using a magnetic mount case and a battery-powered GPS tracker, like the XtremeTrakGPS XT-300 Portable GPS Tracker.

There are many people and organizations who would want to mount a GPS tracker under a vehicle:

  • Parents of Teenage Drivers
  • Suspicious Spouses or Partners
  • Law Enforcement or Government Agencies
  • Fleet Vehicle Owners
  • Private Investigators

The first step in placing a GPS tracking device under a car is deciding which case to use. At XtremeTrakGPS, we offer two GPS cases, designed to fit the XT-300 live GPS tracker.

The standard Otterbox case is for the XT-300 with the standard battery, while the Pelican case is slightly taller, intended to be used with the XT-300 Pro (with extended battery):

Once you've decided which case you are going to use, the next step is to decide where to place it. The ideal location to place a magnetic-mount GPS tracker case is under the vehicle, on the metal frame on either the driver's side or passenger's side. See the diagram below for ideal placement position:

Many people ask us if it would be a better idea to place a portable GPS tracker inside the trunk of a vehicle, or in a seat back pocket, or even under the seat inside the vehicle. The answer is a resounding NO. The main reason you want to mount your GPS tracker UNDER a vehicle is that it will provide the best satellite reception.

At any given time, your GPS tracker is connecting to up to 8-10 GPS satellites in order to correctly determine the position of the tracker. Placing the GPS tracker under the car is the ideal location, because the tracker will receive the GPS satellite signal as it bounces off the road and hits the case.

Placing a tracker inside the vehicle anywhere will cause poor satellite reception, because the GPS signal will have to penetrate the metal of the vehicle itself.

Once you've placed the GPS tracker under the car, you're all set. Just log into the XtremeTrakGPS tracking portal (Demo Here) and you'll be able to watch wherever your vehicle moves. You'll also be able to see the battery life percentage remaining, so you'll know when to remove the tracker and charge it again.
